Learning to visualise the shape of the land and terrain using contours on a map can make route planning and navigation much easier and safer. They are not easy to get to grips with, but when mastered, they're the most reliable navigation source, in all seasons.

The most useful feature on the map for navigating in the mountains is the contour line. Contour features can nearly always be identified on the ground even when covered in snow, and developing your contour interpretation skills is vital if you want to feel confident navigating in all conditions and on all terrain. We will start with the basics, and build upon what is needed to read these contours and understand the bigger picture around us.
We will start the day by meeting at the Moel Siabod cafe for a 10am start. We will briefly run through the plan for the day and some safety pointers ahead of the course.
In the morning
The morning will see us spend a little time indoors, going through the principals of mountain navigation and using contours, and covering a selection of the skills that we will later put to the test when out on the hill. If the weather is adverse, we will look to spend a little longer indoors to ensure we are able to cover all topics, although whatever the weather, we will be outdoors after lunch.
In the afternoon
After lunch, we will head into the surrounding hills and mountains of Snowdonia to test out the skills we looked at during the morning. We will focus on using contours as our primary means of navigating.
At the end of the course
The course will return to the Cafe at about 3.30-4pm for a consolidation of the skills we have looked at during the day and an opportunity to ask any questions you may have. And of course, to enjoy a slice of cake and a hot drink before we part ways at approximately 4.30-5pm.
All courses & trips are run by fully qualified, experienced, and insured guides.

This is a practical course, so the majority of the day will be spent out on the hill. We will keep classroom learning to an absolute minimum.
Some basic navigation experience is preferable, although we will be building upon contour interpretation from a basic level.
Fitness for a day walking in the hills is needed.
